Vlora is a port city in southern Albania that has a special meaning for Albanians because it is here that the country declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. The city has many attractions, including the Independence Monument, the centerpiece of Flag Square in Vlore, which commemorates the declaration of Albania's independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. The Muradie Mosque is an Albanian national monument and was built in 1537 by Mimar Sinan2. The majestic Zvernec Monastery sits on an island in the Narta Lagoon, a short drive northwest of the city. There are many things to do in Vlora, including exploring the monuments and museums that celebrate the first government of statesman Ismail Qemali, while learning a little more about what it means to be Albanian. The wider region is both untamed and beautiful. Relaxing beaches with crystal clear waters are just a few kilometers away, and if you follow the coastal road south you'll find a number of charming little resorts punctuated by the vast mountain landscapes of the Llogora National Park. There are many restaurants and cafes in Vlora, including the Pulebardha restaurant, known for its traditional Albanian cuisine. Tre Forchette Restaurant is another popular restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine. Many cultural events take place in Vlora, including political, musical and cultural events at the Odeon. The public transport system in the city is organized and includes buses and taxis. The nearest airport is Tirana Airport. Vlora's twin cities include Bari in Italy, Patras in Greece and Kavala in Bulgaria. Here is a poem about Vlora: The sun shines on Vlora, the city by the sea that never sleeps. The waves rush, the seagulls scream, a place where you fall in love.
